By 2013, 36 states in the United States are predicted to have a water shortage at a local, regional, or statewide level, under non-drought conditions.

These shortages are already an everyday reality for many areas of the country and the world. Water reclamation provides a viable solution for reducing the strain on traditional sources of water. Why use drinking water to water the lawn? Many facilities have water uses that can be met with non-potable water from alternate water sources. These sources may include rainwater, graywater, groundwater, or condensate. Facility uses for these sources include cooling tower makeup; landscape irrigation; and toilet flushing. Why target cooling towers?
Cooling towers regulate temperature by dissipating heat from circulating water used to cool chillers, air-conditioning equipment, or other process equipment. Using reclaimed water in cooling towers provides the quickest ROI and best economic use of the AX-CTI system, because cooling towers are often the largest consumers of water in facilities, using millions of gallons of water each year in some commercial systems. Water leaves a cooling tower system in four ways: evaporation; drift; blowdown or bleed-off; and basin leaks or overflows. The sum of the water that is lost from the tower must be replaced by make-up water. The AX-CTI can supplement a large percentage of this water with rainwater.
